Brazilian jiu-jitsu for beginners

Brazilian jiu-jitsu (BJJ) is a grappling art: you learn to control and submit a resisting opponent using leverage, not strength or strikes. As a beginner you don't need to be fit, flexible or young — you build all of that by training. At 10th Planet Jiu Jitsu Fullerton beginners train the no-gi system in a coached, drop-the-ego environment, and your first class is free.

What your first class actually looks like

Part of classWhat happens
Warm-upLight movement — you go at your own pace, no pressure.
TechniqueA coach walks through one or two positions; you drill them slowly with a partner.
Rolling (optional)Live practice. As a beginner you can sit out, drill, or roll light — your call.

What to bring (it's cheap to start)

  • A rash guard and shorts (no gi to buy — we're a no-gi school).
  • A water bottle and a positive attitude.
  • That's it. No belt, no gear, no experience.

How fast will I learn?

  • Week 1–2: you learn to move, frame and survive — and you'll be sore in new places.
  • Month 1: the panic fades; you start recognizing positions instead of just reacting.
  • Month 3: you have a few escapes and a couple of submissions that are genuinely yours.

Worried you're too out of shape or too old? You're not — our adult classes run every level, and kids have their own program.

Rolling
Live sparring — practicing technique against a resisting partner.
Tapping
The safe “I'm done” signal; tapping early is how you train for years injury-free.
Drilling
Repeating a technique with a cooperative partner to build muscle memory.

No. You build fitness and flexibility by training, not before it. Our adult classes include people starting in their 30s, 40s and beyond, and you go at your own pace — you never have to spar before you're ready.
