The honest answer

Is jiu-jitsu good for kids?

Yes. Of every kids' activity, jiu-jitsu is one of the few that builds physical confidence and emotional regulation at the same time — because it teaches a child to stay calm under pressure, not just to throw harder. At 10th Planet Jiu Jitsu Fullerton kids train no-gi in a coached, structured, anti-ego environment, and the first class is free.

What kids buildHow jiu-jitsu does it
ConfidenceSolving real problems with a resisting partner — earned, not handed out.
Discipline & focusStructured classes, clear progressions, and attention that carries to school.
Anti-bully skillsHow to control a situation calmly and de-escalate — without striking.
Fitness & coordinationA full-body workout that doesn't feel like exercise.

What age can kids start? Is it safe?

  • Most kids start around ages 5–6; classes are split by age and level so they train with peers.
  • Jiu-jitsu is grappling, not striking — there's no punching or kicking, which makes it one of the lower-impact martial arts for children.
  • Kids learn to tap (the safe “stop” signal) from day one, so they always control their own safety.
  • It's no-gi, so there's nothing to buy beyond a rash guard and shorts.

Ready to see it in person? Our kids program runs throughout the week and the first class is free — come watch a session.

Parent questions, answered

Most kids start around ages 5–6. At 10th Planet Fullerton, kids' classes are split by age and level so children train with peers their own size and experience, and the first class is free.

Yes — jiu-jitsu is grappling, not striking, so there's no punching or kicking. Kids learn the safe 'tap' signal from day one and train under direct coaching, making it one of the lower-impact martial arts for children.

It teaches kids to stay calm and control a physical situation without striking — the confidence to de-escalate and, if needed, safely neutralize a threat. That quiet confidence is often what stops bullying in the first place.

No. 10th Planet Fullerton is a no-gi school, so kids just need a rash guard and shorts — there's no expensive gi to buy.
