Nervous about walking in? Here is exactly how your first class at 10th Planet Fullerton goes — minute by minute.
Walking into a jiu-jitsu academy for the first time is the hardest part — and it is almost never as intimidating as people imagine. At 10th Planet Fullerton, the large majority of people who walk through our doors have never trained a day in their lives. Here is exactly what your first no-gi class looks like, so you can show up knowing what to expect.
There is no gi (uniform) to buy. Just bring shorts without pockets or zippers, a rash guard or a snug t-shirt, water, and a pair of sandals for off the mat. Trim your nails, leave the jewelry at home, and arrive about ten minutes early so a coach can get you signed in and oriented.
Class opens with a movement-based warm-up — shrimping, rolling, breakfalls and mobility drills that double as your first jiu-jitsu lessons. You will move at your own pace. Nobody expects a beginner to keep up with a black belt, and our coaches scale everything to where you are.
Next, a coach demonstrates the technique of the day, then you pair up and drill it with a partner. This is slow, cooperative and friendly — you take turns, ask questions, and build the movement into muscle memory. Your partner is there to help you learn, not to crush you.
Toward the end of class comes "rolling" — live, resisting practice. As a first-timer you are never thrown to the wolves. You will either sit out and watch, drill more, or roll light with an experienced partner who controls the pace and keeps you safe.
This is the part everyone is nervous about and the part everyone ends up loving. It is problem-solving, it is a workout, and it is the fastest way to improve.
Expect to be tired, a little sweaty, and probably smiling. Most people leave their first class already planning the next one. Your first class is on us — no commitment, no pressure.
Beginners welcome — your first class is free, zero commitment.
No. You set the pace, and jiu-jitsu itself gets you in shape. Plenty of members start with zero athletic background.
Jiu-jitsu is a controlled, supervised sport. Beginners drill cooperatively and roll light with experienced partners. Safety and respect are non-negotiable in our room.
